Arrive airport: Venice or Bergamo

Depart airport: Milan Airport

We have adapted this trip to start and finish in the heart of the Dolomites and make the transfers to and from the airport easier. The plan is to include as many of the epic Dolomites trip as possible and then ride the Stelvio and Gavia. This is quite a ‘parcours’ and the riding is truly spectacular. This is a trip for level 4/5 riders who enjoy a serious challenge!

Saturday

Arrive a Venice Marco Polo airport and transfer to our hotel in Caprile in the heart of the Dolomites.

Sunday

Our first day starts in the Sella Ronda with the relatively easy Colle de Santa Lucia before we soon hit the Giau! This is a tough one with 10km at 9%. It’s one of the most famous in the Italy and the scenery is stunning. We ride down to the ski resort Cortina before following a relatively flat 40km circuit around the Monte Christalo coming back through Cortina and onto the Passo Falzarego before the 10km descent to the hotel. 105km 2600m climbing Overnight in Caprile

Monday

The Sella Ronda circuit is one of the most famous rides not only in Italy but world-wide and once you have experienced the breathtaking scenery you will know why. The 100km circuit takes in 4 major climbs. We start with the Passo Pordoi which is the longest of the day before spending the day up and down the Sella, Gardena and finally the Falzarego this time from Corvara. 100km 2800m climbing Overnight in Caprile

Tuesday

Riding out from the hotel today there is a gentle start before the road ramps up to the Marmolada Glacier and the Passo Fedaia (which has some very steep sections) This is a must for some photos and is often referred to the Queen of the Dolomites. There is a log sweeping descent through some ski stations before we have the short Passo Costalunga before riding onto Bolzano. Here we pick up a cycle path and have 45km on the flat where ‘we can spin out the legs’ in preparation for the Passo Stelvio tomorrow! 130km 1800m climbing Overnight in Merano

Wednesday

This is a slightly shorter day but it includes the mighty Stelvio. The ride to the base of the Stelvio is on fabulous cycle path through the orchards of the Merano valley. We ride the Stelvio from Prato de Stelvio. It’s 25km to the summit with 48 hairpin bends to negotiate.  It tops out at 2757m. There is a long descent to the ski resort of Bormio before they relatively easy 12km climb to our hotel for the next 2 nights in Santa Caterina.  95km 2000m climbing Overnight in Santa Caterina

Thursday

We have a couple of options today – you can enjoy the luxurious Tre Signori hotel and spa and perhaps spin down to Bormio for some lunch. You could also ride to the beautiful Cannaca lake which is a round trip of around 65km with 1500m climbing Option 3 would be ride to the Passo Gavia from Santa Caterina. Leaving the hotel you are onto the climb immediately. It’s a 15km climb with an average gradient of 5.5% to the summit at 2621m. Time for a coffee and in the mountain top refuge, which has a great display of Giro memorabilia. The choice is yours and you can do as little or as much as you wish.

Friday

It’s our last day the it’s a challenging one as we take on the brutal Mortirola and the Gavia ! Riding out from Santa Caterina we drop back down to Bormio the  along the valley floor for 40km and onto the Mortirola. (11km at 11%)   there is long descent to the valley and a false flat to Ponte de Legno.  Our hotel is here and option 1 would be finish your day here and enjoy a late lunch! If you have the legs and motivation we tackle the Gavia. 16km at 8.1% This a hard effort on some rough roads but well worth the effort when you reach the summit at 2600m.  We spend our last evening in this lovely town with a celebratory meal and some well-deserved Prosecco!
